HISTORY MEETS THE CARIBBEAN

A Caribbean city that draws you in

Cartagena is one of those places that feels vivid from the first moment: warm Caribbean air, bougainvillea spilling over balconies, stone walls glowing at sunset and streets that seem to carry centuries of stories beneath your feet.

Founded in 1533, Cartagena became one of the Spanish Empire’s most important Caribbean ports and an essential link in the maritime routes of the West Indies. Its walls, bastions and forts were built over centuries to defend that strategic position, and today the historic port, fortresses and monuments are recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage.

Centuries of history. Caribbean colour. And the sea always beside you.

But Cartagena is not frozen in history. Getsemaní brings murals, music and street life; Bocagrande adds a modern skyline beside the sea; and a short boat ride takes you toward the Rosario Islands and Barú, where the rhythm changes to warm water, beaches and long Caribbean lunches.

Come for the walls and the postcards. Stay for the evenings, the flavours and the feeling that Cartagena is always inviting you to take one more walk.

A LITTLE FURTHER

History, neighbourhoods & sea

Cartagena’s magic comes from the contrast between an important historic port and a Caribbean city that is still very much alive.

PULL UP A CHAIR

Taste Cartagena

Cartagena’s food is shaped by the Caribbean: seafood, coconut, plantain, tropical fruit and the culinary traditions of Colombia’s coast.

Fish, coconut rice & patacones. A classic coastal plate can be beautifully simple — fresh fish with arroz con coco and crispy fried green plantain, especially good when the sea is only a few steps away.

Arepa de huevo & street food. This fried corn arepa filled with egg is one of the Caribbean’s best-known street foods, alongside empanadas, carimañolas and fresh fruit sold throughout the city.

Cartagena after dark. The city’s restaurant scene now ranges from traditional Caribbean cooking to contemporary kitchens using local seafood, fruit and Colombian ingredients in more refined ways.

Taste it, don’t rush it. A cooking class, market visit, rum tasting or long dinner inside the old city can reveal as much about Cartagena as another monument.

Offshore, the city gives way to Caribbean islands and coral environments. The change in pace is immediate: sea, sun, swimming and time that suddenly feels much less important.
