THE CITY LIVES IN RHYTHM

A city that moves to its own rhythm

Cali has a way of making rhythm feel like part of everyday life. Music escapes from dance schools and neighbourhood bars, conversations feel animated, and by evening the city seems to move with a little more confidence in every step.

The capital of Valle del Cauca is internationally known for salsa, but the city’s personality comes from a much wider mix of influences: Afro-Colombian and Pacific culture, Andean surroundings, warm weather, street food, art, sport and a deeply social way of experiencing public space.

Salsa in the streets. Pacific flavours. And mountains just beyond the city.

Walk through the historic neighbourhood of San Antonio, follow the river past public art and cultural spaces, watch dancers train at astonishing speed, then leave the urban energy behind for Pance and the Farallones, where rivers and mountains rise just outside the city.

Cali is not a city you understand by standing still. Listen, taste, dance — and let the city show you its rhythm.

A LITTLE FURTHER

Culture, salsa & nature

Cali’s strongest identity is musical, but its setting between the Andes and the Pacific also gives it a remarkable natural and cultural range.

Taste Cali

Cali and Valle del Cauca have a food culture that is colourful, sweet, refreshing and strongly influenced by the Pacific and the region’s agricultural abundance.

Lulada. A refreshing drink made from lulo fruit, lime, sugar and ice — tart, cold and especially good in Cali’s warm climate.

Cholado. A generous mix of shaved ice, fruit, syrups and condensed milk, usually eaten with a spoon and best understood as dessert, snack and heat relief all at once.

Pandebono, aborrajado & Valle flavours. Try warm pandebono, sweet plantain filled with cheese in an aborrajado, empanadas, marranitas and traditional dishes such as arroz atollado or chuleta valluna.

Pacific flavours in the city. Seafood, coconut, plantain and drinks connected with Pacific traditions add another layer, making Cali one of Colombia’s most interesting places to taste the cultural connection between the Andes and the coast.

Salsa did not originate in Cali, but the city made the music its own. Dance academies, collectors, orchestras, clubs and festivals have turned salsa into a living cultural language.
